On this side of the Red Sea,
when the ground quaked
beneath Egypt’s flying chariots,
we heard the victory cry of her warriors
and felt the hot shame
of panic
creep into our loins
and unman us
as we fled
on broken sandals
over mollusks and barnacles.
That was a day of God’s coming.
When God arrived,
just like at Horeb,
we stood,
mouths gaping,
hands limp at our sides
like a colony of penguins,
and witnessed the coming of God.
On the other side of abject fear
we watched the laughing waves
swallow our dread.
Something inside us trembled.
Something inside us whispered,
“Behold, our God!”

I love this poem! Thank you for sharing. I have felt like a penguin before.
