There has been a growing refocus on the gospel and its transformative power of late within Christian evangelicalism, an emphasis for which I am grateful. Books are being churned out in an attempt to help us understand not only the blood of Christ, but the affect it in fact has on our life. What seems to be overlooked, however, is the role the imagination plays in this process. We treat the gospel as if it were something to understand like a math problem and while it can be written in terms of a logical syllogism, a belief in the Gospel demands much more than intellectual assent. The hardest part of understanding the Gospel is not so much understanding it, but picturing myself sanctified by the blood and then living as though it were, in fact, actually the case.
